Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment* Review

We have tried our best to avoid nappy rash at all costs, from using eco friendly nappies to the gentlest wipes and only natural skincare for the first six months of Emme being earth side but it would appear that nappy rash isn't just caused by 'nappies'. Although the term nappy rash is usually used to describe the inflammation of the baby's skin due to prolonged contact with a damp nappy, it can actually be caused by many other factors including antibiotics, bubble bath and teething.

We are currently toilet training Emme but nappy rash cream is still very much a staple product for us as although you would think that less nappies means less 'nappy rash' we have discovered that is not quite the case, so when I was contacted recently and asked if we wanted to review Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment, it was a very welcome opportunity. We were kindly sent a very generous hamper of goodies for Emme along with two tubes of Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment* to try and with us just at the end of our last tube of nappy rash cream, it couldn't have come at a better time.

We have been applying Bepanthen to her skin as part of her bedtime routine to help protect against the causes of  'nappy rash' as she had previously on occasion experienced inflammation from having accidents in bed which causes her skin to be in contact with urine for a prolonged amount of time, until one of us wakes up and realises. Luckily Bepanthen has a new easy-to-use, flip-top cap so when I wake at 3am to change Emme, myself and the bedding from an accident, its easy to quickly pop some cream on her to soothe any irritation without having to turn the light on and wake her up to look for a lid, perfect for wriggly toddlers. The new tube is also plastic which is much better than the previous metal tube and is much better than other brands tubs which I find to be unhygenic and causes wastage

At first I have to admit, I was unsure about the texture of the cream as upon first contact the product can appear very greasy due to the oil, however the texture is something I very quickly became used to and realised that this meant that a little goes a long way.

Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment creates a transparent and breathable barrier to protect delicate skin from the causes of nappy rash whilst the Pro vitamin b5 gently helps to aid skin recovery whilst locking in the skins natural moisture, allowing the skin to recover without drying it out. It is also the 'only leading nappy care product meeting all of the 9 gold standards of an ideal nappy care product which means Bepanthen:

  • is clinically proven for babies delicate skin
  • enhances the natural protection of the skin
  • maintains optimum moisture levels
  • no unnecessary ingredients
  • contains ingredients with documented safety and benefit
  • is free from potentially toxic ingredients
  • is free from potential sensitisers such as fragrances
  • contains no antiseptics or preservatives
  • is pleasant to use'

Although we have been quite lucky in that Emme hasn't had an awful lot of rashes whilst in nappies compared to some babies and toddlers, as statistics show that 1 in 3 has nappy rash at any one time; she does have quite sensitive skin. So if we use a new washing detergent on her clothes or a bath product on her skin, her skin does sometimes react and with her now wearing 'big girl pants' which sit against her skin, this is something I have had to be more mindful of. Emme's most common cause of nappy rash however has infact been when she has cut teeth. If I have ever even had an inkling that she may be cutting a tooth, 'nappy rash' has always confirmed it and with teeth still left to cut, we still have the dreaded rash from that to look forward to too. Luckily we have found that a thin layer of Bepanthen before bedtime has helped to keep Emme's skin protected from irritation due to night time accidents and if she has had any signs of irritation, a thin layer on the affected area seems to soothe the rash, reducing the redness and inflammation and it clears it up quickly too.

Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment is available from all leading supermarkets, chemists and independent pharmacies. RRP £3.99 for 30g and £7.99 for 100g.

So if your starting toilet training and thought your nappy rash cream was no longer needed, you may want to dig it back out just in case.

Have you used Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment?
